English Combined

English Combined is a unique and engaging course that blends the study of language and literature. It encourages students to explore how meaning is created in both spoken and written texts, while also developing their own creative and analytical writing. This course is ideal for students who enjoy reading, writing, and thinking critically about how language shapes our understanding of the world.

What will you study?

Students follow the Edexcel A Level English Language and Literature specification, which includes:

  • Paper 1: Voices in Speech and Writing – analysis of an anthology of spoken and written texts, and study of a drama text
  • Paper 2: Varieties in Language and Literature – study of two texts from a chosen theme and analysis of unseen non-fiction texts
  • Coursework: Investigating and Creating Texts – independent study of two texts (one fiction, one non-fiction) and production of original writing with an analytical commentary
Assessment

Assessment is through two written examinations and one coursework component:

  • Paper 1: 2 hours 30 minutes – 40% of A Level
  • Paper 2: 2 hours 30 minutes – 40% of A Level
  • Coursework: Two pieces of original writing and an analytical commentary – 20% of A Level
Entry requirements

To study English Combined, students should have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9–4 (or equivalent)
  • A Grade 5 or above in both English Language and English Literature
