Spanish

Spanish is a vibrant and enriching subject that opens the door to global communication and cultural understanding. This course is ideal for students who are passionate about languages and want to deepen their fluency while exploring the history, politics, and arts of the Spanish-speaking world. It combines linguistic development with critical thinking and cultural insight.

What will you study?

Students follow the AQA A Level Spanish specification, which includes:

  • Theme 1: Aspects of Hispanic society
    Modern and traditional values, cyberspace, and equal rights

  • Theme 2: Artistic culture in the Hispanic world
    Regional identity, cultural heritage, music, and cinema

  • Theme 3: Multiculturalism in Hispanic society
    Immigration, integration, and racism

  • Theme 4: Aspects of political life in the Hispanic world
    Youth engagement, monarchies and dictatorships, and popular movements

  • Literary texts and films:
    Study of one literary text and one film in Spanish

  • Individual Research Project:
    An in-depth investigation on a topic of the student’s choice related to the Spanish-speaking world

Assessment

Assessment is through three components:

  • Paper 1: Listening, Reading, and Writing – 2 hours 30 minutes – 50% of A Level
  • Paper 2: Writing (literary texts and films) – 2 hours – 20% of A Level
  • Paper 3: Speaking – 21 to 23 minutes – 30% of A Level
    Includes discussion of a sub-theme and presentation of the Individual Research Project
Entry requirements

To study A Level Spanish, students should have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9–4 (or equivalent)
  • Grade 6 or above in GCSE Spanish
