Mathematics

Mathematics is a highly respected and intellectually rigorous subject that develops logical reasoning, problem-solving, and analytical thinking. This course builds on the foundations of GCSE Maths and introduces students to new areas such as calculus, mechanics, and statistics. It is ideal for students who enjoy working with numbers, patterns, and abstract concepts, and who want to pursue careers in science, engineering, finance, or technology.

What will you study?

Students follow the Edexcel A Level Mathematics specification, which includes:

  • Pure Mathematics 1: Proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, vectors
  • Pure Mathematics 2: Further development of the above topics, plus numerical methods
  • Applied Mathematics:
    • Statistics: Sampling, data presentation, probability, statistical distributions, hypothesis testing
    • Mechanics: Kinematics, forces and Newton’s laws, moments
Assessment

Assessment is through three written examinations at the end of the course:

  • Paper 1: Pure Mathematics 1 – 2 hours (33.3% of A Level)
  • Paper 2: Pure Mathematics 2 – 2 hours (33.3% of A Level)
  • Paper 3: Statistics and Mechanics – 2 hours (33.3% of A Level)

All papers are calculator-based and equally weighted.

Entry requirements

To study Mathematics, students should have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9–4 (or equivalent)
  • A Grade 7 or above in GCSE Mathematics
  • All students must have a Casio FX-911EX ClassWiz Scientific Calculator
