Year 6 to 7 transition

Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone and we’re committed to making the move from Year 6 to Year 7 as smooth and positive as possible. We understand that this transition can bring a mix of anticipation and nerves - for both students and their families - and we have a well-established programme in place to help every child feel confident and ready for the journey ahead.

We’re proud of the warm, inclusive environment we create for our new students, and we’re always here to help with any questions or concerns along the way.

Our transition programme

Our transition support begins well before students arrive in September. Key elements of our programme include:

Primary school visits

Members of our pastoral and leadership teams visit local primary schools to meet students, answer questions, and begin building relationships.

Induction day

In the summer term, all new Year 7 students are invited to spend a day at Collingwood. They’ll meet their form tutors and classmates, take part in fun activities, and get to know the layout of the school.

Parent information evening

We also host an evening event for parents and carers, where we share key information about life at Collingwood and how we support students both academically and pastorally.

Pastoral support and wellbeing

From the outset, we introduce students to our pastoral care structure, including their form tutor, the year manager for Year 7, and the wider student support team. We ensure that students know where to go and who to speak to if they need help, whether it’s with friendships, organisation, or settling in. Building these connections early helps students feel safe, supported, and ready to thrive.

Adapting to a new academic structure

We recognise that moving from a single class teacher to having different teachers for each subject is a big change. During the first weeks, we take time to help students understand their timetable, navigate the college site, and get to know their subject teachers. Lessons are structured to build confidence and independence gradually, and staff are always on hand to guide students through this new way of learning.

First weeks at Collingwood

In September, we provide a carefully structured start to help students settle in. Form tutors and our dedicated Year 7 team are on hand to offer support, answer questions, and ensure every student feels part of the Collingwood community from day one.
