Media Studies

Media Studies is a dynamic and contemporary subject that explores how media shapes our understanding of the world. Students analyse a wide range of media forms—from film and television to social media and advertising—while also developing their own creative production skills. This course is ideal for students who are curious about media influence, enjoy critical analysis, and want to create their own media content.

What will you study?

Students follow the AQA A Level Media Studies specification, which includes:

  • Study of a wide range of media forms: TV, film, newspapers, magazines, video games, music videos, social and online media, and advertising
  • Exploration of media language, representation, industries, and audiences
  • Application of media theories and analysis of historical, cultural, and political contexts
  • Creation of an individual media production in response to a set brief
Assessment

Assessment is through two written examinations and one coursework component:

  • Paper 1: Issues and Debates – 2 hours (35% of A Level)
  • Paper 2: Close Study Products – 2 hours (35% of A Level)
  • Non-Examined Assessment (Coursework): Individual media production (30% of A Level)
Entry requirements

To study Media Studies, students should have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9–4 (or equivalent)
  • A Grade 5 in both English Language and English Literature is recommended
